Outwardly, Dr. Jade Balfour is charming -- noble -- and exceedingly dedicated to bettering the lives of the people of Auldrant. He may have made most of his discoveries at the Royal Fonic Artes Research Academy of Grand Chokmah, but those discoveries are not for any one nation, and, with the help of Daath, he has done his best to prevent them from belonging to any one monarch. Any eccentricity -- it's said he practically lives in his labs, and that fomicry is his only passion -- is forgiven and no worse than what you'd expect from a former child prodigy and one of the great humanitarians of the world.

Beneath the pretty veneer, the pleasant smiles and gracious kisses over the backs of all the right hands, Jade is cold, his smiles calculated and occasionally punctuated by words sharp enough to draw blood. He is charming only because it suits his purposes, and his decision not to ally himself with any one nation has more to do with limiting his pool of resources than any particular concern over the "misuse" of his research in wartime. The part about eschewing human companionship in favor of his work is true enough, but it's no tragic abstinence -- honestly, he would avoid such companionship even if he had nothing better to do with his time. Having lost (he would say sacrificed) the only people who ever came close to understanding or caring for him, Jade has grown from a solitary child into an adult who finds human interaction disgusting and mildly incomprehensible.
